Nick's 2007 Diary so far...
While on holiday in Australia, recovering from the crazy year that 2006 became, the most unexpected happened: I got a call from Snoop Dogg's manager... "Snoop wants to lay down some tracks, can you do it?"
Snoop had come to Australia to make a special guest appearance at a large outdoor festival along with the Beastie Boys... "He just wants to do one or two songs. It will be like an 8 hour thing. We are on our way to the studio right now. Can you meet Snoop there in 30?

Me and Snoop's bodyguard Galaxy. I'm 6 foot, 1 inch by the way!
I immediately canceled my fine day at the beach with friends and drove to Studio 301 at incredible speed... 4 DAYS LATER, much inhaling, drinking blue Gatorade, eating waffles and fried chicken... 8 songs are recorded! Thank you very much! See you back in LA! YoopeeYo YoopeeYaY !
Next stop... NEW YORK !
YEAH YEAH YEAH's
5 days at James Iha's studio (Stratosphere) having the best time imaginable with one of my favorite bands on earth... the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. There was such a buzz in the air!
We set it up so Karen could sing her vocals live from a room up above the control room... so she could look down through a large window and see Brian and Nick going wild in the main recording area below.
Things got crazy!... I don't think she had ever had that view of Brian thumping his drums. He looked like some giant maniac insect. The control room was shaking from Miss O jumping up and down, giggling, and crazy noises. Glad to say it was all captured on tape.
Needless to say, it turned out GREAT! Can't wait for people to hear this one!
The EP is called "Is Is" and comes out July 24. The tracks are called:
Rocker to Swallow
Down Boy
Kiss Kiss
Isis

Hope you like it!!!

TWO DAYS OFF
SUPERGRASS in BERLIN
Fuck, I missed my flight! Arrived 4 hours late to start rehearsals... How very unprofessional!
Berlin! What a city, I wanna move here NOW! We worked at the Old Hansa Studio where Bowie did Low, Heroes, and Scary Monsters, Iggy did Lust for Life, and U2 did Achtung!
Quite an adventure. We recorded some very loud raw sounding tracks and lots of rolling around and laughing was done. Supergrass is the funniest band I've ever worked with. I love 'em! After a month in Berlin, we flew to LA and mixed 1/2 the LP at Seedy Underbelly Studios. We will finish mixing the rest in August.

NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS
NEXT... off to London for another adventure with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds... this time in a private studio Im not allowed to mention cos it's Private! Nuf Said !

All I can say is... that Warren's Beard is out of control and he has THINGS living in it, Jim's Beard is fantastic!, Nick's Mustache is worthy of a mexican porn star. The album is VERY GOOD, and grooves like a mothafukker !
Stay tuned for more...
The Year 2006
Nick Launay just finished mixing The Arcade Fire's New
Album called Neon Bible. It was mixed with
the band on a desk with NO automation in their studio in a
church near Montreal. The results are extremely uplifting to
say the least. The first song called Intervention went
to radio just before Christmas, and the LP is due out in April.
Just before The Arcade Fire, Launay was in
London with Mr. Cave putting finishing touches
to the very raw Grinderman album.
Self-proclaimed,
foul-mouthed, noisy, hairy, and damn well old enough to know
better, Grinderman is: Nick Cave, Warren
Ellis, Martyn Casey and Jim
Sclavunos. The first track available to the public
is No Pussy Blues which can be
heard on the band's Myspace Page.
Here's a quick review:
"Set over a throbbing pornographic bass line, the
world holds its breath for the onslaught of the wah's shriek
of frustration and dirty water," counters Casey. "No
Pussy Blues continues in the blues tradition and its timeless
fascination with getting laid... or not."
The
LP is self-titled, GRINDERMAN and
is due out on Launay's Birthday: March 5th!
How about that!!!

2006
has indeed been a busy one... in between Grinderman and
mixing The Arcade Fire, Nick Produced a new
long anticipated LP for Silverchair, some
of which was recorded with a 70-piece orchestra conducted by Van
Dyke Parks in Prague. The album to be called Young
Modern is nearly finished and is due out in
May.
Before all this, Nick started the year making an album
with one of his other favorite bands: The Veils.
It was recorded at a residential studio in Los Angeles called Seedy
Underbelly. If you haven't heard this LP... YOU MUST,
it's called Nux Vomica.
What
else??? Somewhere in the middle of all this He also produced
a very wild EP by a young Sydney band, The
Follow. The featured song Christian
Girl will make you grow claws and lengthen your
teeth.
